It’s February 2025~3 years since initial signs and diagnosis of Layla’s mast cell tumor. Every winter storm brings the anxiety of ice causing injuries, cold on the one front paw bearing most of Layla’s weight… and let’s not mention her weight! She likely will be on steroids the rest of her life for her GI issues, which is causing major hunger! Can’t find her? Her head is in your backpack snacking on every post it note she can find. You’re right, she doesn’t care that it’s the ONLY place you wrote that account number. You heard her romp up the stairs? Oh! She has T. P.’d your room as she finds a comfortable place on the floor to snack on the roll of tp. No, she’s never chewed shoes before, until now…at 7 years old, because she’s just hungry from taking steroids.
So how do you balance satisfying her raging hunger and keeping her weight under control? We’ve tried different foods. She now has breakfast, lunch snack, dinner, and bedtime snack. All of this has stopped her frequent vomiting. In addition, Pepcid AC, METAMUCIL, FortiFlora and steroids to mitigate unshapely poop. I don’t know if I’d call it diarrhea- she’s not going uncontrollably, unscheduled, or all the time. Just her usual times and no shape to it. Steroids seem to help, but it is not resolved. I just have anxiety, I want her to be healthy and to feel good so she can live the best life that I’m able to provide for her! Will keep working with internal medicine to resolve this issue… stay tuned!
